Changes in local protocols on inpatient cervical priming and introduction of outpatient priming: A nationwide survey in the Netherlands
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Jun 12, 2021
Croll DMR, Hoge PC, Verhoeven CJM, et al. - Researchers conducted this survey study among obstetricians of all 72 hospitals with a maternity unit in the Netherlands with the aim to assess (changes in) local procedures for inpatient cervical priming as part of induction of labor as well as to identify the implementation of outpatient cervical priming in the Netherlands. Participants were administered a questionnaire consisting of three parts: basic hospital data, local protocol on methods of inpatient induction of labor (IPI), local protocol for outpatient induction of labor (OPI). Sixty-six of 72 hospitals provided a response, giving a response rate of 92%. Analysis suggests a shift in local protocols for IPI towards the use of a Foley catheter in the Netherlands. OPI is offered by more than half of the hospitals. Given a lack of data concerning the safety and efficacy data of OPI, research on this topic is urgently warranted.
