Changes in frailty among ICU survivors and associated factors: Results of a one-year prospective cohort study using the Dutch Clinical Frailty Scale
Journal of Critical Care Nov 13, 2019
Geense W, et al. - Researchers undertook this prospective cohort analysis to determine shifts in frailty in the year following ICU admission, as well as its related factors. They analyzed adult ICU patients who were admitted between July 2016–December 2017. They used the Clinical Frailty Scale to determine frailty prior to ICU admission, at hospital discharge, as well as three and 12 months following ICU admission. More frailty was evident in 42% of the unplanned ICU patients and in 27% of the planned ICU patients, one year post-ICU admission. The factors that were related to being more frail in both groups were older age, longer hospital length of stay, and discharge location. The factors that were found to be related to being less frail in the planned patients were male gender, higher education level and mechanical ventilation.
