Changes in choroidal thickness and volume are related to urinary albumin excretion in type 2 diabetic patients without retinopathy
Clinical Ophthalmology Aug 16, 2018
Farias LB, et al. - Researchers used spectral-domain optical coherence tomography to assess choroidal thickness and volume in patients with type 2 diabetes and microalbuminuria. Participants were 37 diabetic patients without diabetic retinopathy (18 normoalbuminuric and 19 microalbuminuric) and 21 healthy controls. Using the automated Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study grid, they mapped choroidal thickness and volume. They also manually generated a topographic map of thickness. Thereafter, they measured choroid at 10 locations under the fovea, temporally and nasally. Findings showed the presence of choroidal changes in type 2 diabetic patients before clinical development of retinopathy. Diabetic patients without diabetic retinopathy demonstrated an association of microalbuminuria with a decrease in choroidal thickness and volume.
