Changes in choroidal thickness and optic nerve head morphology after filtering surgery: Nonpenetrating deep sclerectomy vs trabeculectomy
BMC Ophthalmology Jan 25, 2019
Bouillot A, et al. - In this prospective observational study, researchers assessed 23 eyes with glaucoma to estimate the variations in choroidal thickness and lamina cribrosa position after nonpenetrating deep sclerectomy (NPDS) and trabeculectomy. They used OCT-enhanced depth imaging (OCT-EDI) to measure choroidal thickness, prelaminar tissue thickness and lamina cribrosa position before and after 7 days and 1 month of surgery. They observed a mean 64% decrease in intraocular pressure (IOP) 1 week after surgery and 55% mean decrease at 1 month as compared to at baseline. One week after surgery, they noticed a significant increment in thickness of the prelaminar tissue (PLT) and subfoveolar choroidal thickness (SFCT). Although, they noticed no discrepancies between NPDS and trabeculectomy concerning these structural modifications.
