Changes in cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular events in the elderly population

Journal of the American Heart Association May 23, 2021

Yang PS, Jang E, Yu HT, et al. - Researchers assessed alterations in the ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) status and investigated if these alterations were related to incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality in the elderly Asian population. Analysis of 208,673 participants without prior CVD, including 109,431 who exhibited alterations in CVH status, was performed in the Korea National Health Insurance Service–Senior cohort aged ≥60 years. In the elderly (aged 60–74 years) and very elderly (≥75 years) populations, the link of the changes in cardiovascular risk factors with incident CVD was examined from 2004 to 2014. A lower risk of CVD and mortality was brought about by higher CVH status in both the elderly and very elderly participants. Findings showed a consistent association between the improvement of a composite metric of CVH and the decreased risk of CVD, in both the elderly and very elderly Asian populations without CVD. Body mass index and total cholesterol were not sufficiently informative to predict all‐cause mortality in both the elderly and very elderly populations.
