Changes in bone marrow adipose tissue one year after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass - A prospective cohort study
Journal of Bone and Mineral Research Jun 28, 2019
Blom-Høgestøl IK, et al. - In patients with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D) preoperatively and one year after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), researchers examined bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) fraction of the hip, as well as factors correlated with BMAT change. In this prospective cohort study, subjects with morbid obesity scheduled for RYGB were examined preoperatively and one year following RYGB. Forty-four candidates were involved, and preoperative examinations were feasible in 35. There was a positive correlation with glycosylated hemoglobin and a negative correlation to bone mineral density (aBMD) with regard to preoperative BMAT fraction. In obese subjects, a high BMAT appears to be linked to lower aBMD and worse glycemic control. A significant decrease in BMAT was noted after RYGB, but it did not vary among respondents with and without T2D, and it seemed to be gender-specific.
