Changes in acute kidney injury epidemiology in critically ill patients: A population-based cohort study in Korea
Annals of Intensive Care Jun 14, 2019
Hwang S, et al. - In this study with 1,744,235 participants, researchers focused on the recent epidemiologic shifts in severe acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill patients in Korea. An increase in the incidence of AKI was noted, from 7.4% in 2008 to 8.3% in 2015. The estimated age-standardized AKI rate was 7018.6 per 100,000 person-years. In AKI patients, increased risk of in-hospital mortality, mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and vasopressor need was shown in multivariable analysis. Overall, in-hospital mortality of critically ill patients with AKI has improved due to recent advances in medical management for AKI, although increases in the elderly population and AKI incidence were evident.
