Change in the cause of inpatient mortality after arthroplasty: A retrospective study
Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research Jun 21, 2019
Zuo Y, et al. - Via a retrospective study that included all patients (4,176 total knee arthroplasties, 2,164 total hip arthroplasties, and 1,031 femoral head replacements patients) who underwent arthroplasty, the researchers intended to investigate the inpatient mortality rate post-arthroplasty and the determinants of mortality in order to assure enhanced perioperative management. A decrease in the mortality rate in the last 5 years with the change in the cause of death over time was observed. Instead of cardiovascular complications, pneumonia became the leading cause of postoperative death in the past 5 years. Hence, arthroplasty was concluded as a safe and effective procedure associated with comparatively low inpatient mortality in China. Due to the betterment of perioperative management over time, no growth in inpatient mortality was noticed even with increasing surgery volume.
