Change in spontaneous swallowing frequency in HNC patients undergoing C/RT
Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jun 27, 2021
Carnaby GD, Madhavan A, Barikroo A, et al. - This prospective cohort study was conducted to assess the role as well as the trajectory of spontaneous swallowing frequency (SFA) in patients suffering from head and neck cancer (HNC) receiving chemoradiotherapy (C/RT). From baseline to 3 months post-C/RT, 80 patients with HNC were followed. In general, HNC patients showed a parabolic decrease in most measures over the C/RT trajectory. No improved recovery by 3 months was evident in SFA and perceived xerostomia. SFA was found to be associated with swallow function, xerostomia, and functional diet consumed posttreatment and pain at 3 months. Findings of this exploratory analysis indicate a likely usefulness of SFA as a tool to detect dysphagia following HNC treatment. Additionally, SFA may provide a simple as well as objective measure of swallowing function alteration in HNC over the C/RT trajectory.
