Cervical spine clearance in adults following blunt trauma: A national survey across major trauma centres in England
Clinical Radiology Dec 14, 2017
Chilvers G, et al. - Current practice in cervical spine clearance was evaluated across major trauma centres in England and current guidelines were reviewed in this study. Across most major trauma centres in England, multidetector computed tomography (CT) was the preferred initial imaging technique when blunt cervical spine trauma was suspected. If initial CT imaging was normal and there was no focal neurology on clinical assessment, there was widespread reliance on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to clear the cervical spine in both alert and obtunded patients. This called for greater awareness of the reliability of a high-quality normal multidetector CT examination in clearing the cervical spine in the absence of focal neurology.
