Cervical radiculopathy: Is a prosthesis preferred over fusion surgery?: A systematic review
European Spine Journal Oct 30, 2019
Goedmakers CMW, et al. - Researchers compared cervical arthroplasty (ACDA) vs fusion (ACDF) following anterior cervical discectomy, in terms of clinical outcome, in patients exclusively experiencing radiculopathy, as well as, they assessed variations with mixed patient populations. They used a sensitive search strategy to explore PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, COCHRANE, CENTRAL and CINAHL. This analysis was performed including eight studies that exclusively compared intervertebral devices in radiculopathy patients. In a separate results table, they analyzed 29 articles regarding patients with myelopathy with or without radiculopathy. Findings revealed the comparable effectiveness of ACDF and ACDA in managing cervical radiculopathy because of a herniated disc in radiculopathy patients. On comparing the 8 radiculopathy with the 29 mixed population studies, clinical outcomes between the two types of patients did not vary up to a clinically relevant magnitude.
