Cervical cancer screening history prior to a diagnosis of cervical cancer in Danish women aged 60 years and older—A national cohort study

Cancer Medicine Jan 06, 2019

Hammer A, et al. - In Denmark, investigators evaluated older women (aged ≥ 60 years; n=1,907) with cervical cancer to define the screening history from 2009 to 2013. They found that the majority of study participants had squamous cell carcinoma and advanced-stage disease (ASD). ASD was increased with advancing age. They also observed that sufficiently screened women were less likely to receive a diagnosis of ASD vs never-screened women (53.8% vs 67.5%), suggesting an increased incidence of cancer in older women due to insufficient screening prior to screening exit, premature screening exit, and the low sensitivity of screening.
