Cerebrovascular disease hospitalizations following emergency department headache visits: A nested case‐control study
Academic Emergency Medicine Aug 01, 2021
Liberman AL, Hassoon A, Fanai M, et al. - Substantial harm occurs in cases with delayed diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease (CVD). In case of identification of diagnostic process failures at emergency department (ED) visits that precede CVD hospitalization, development of interventions to improve diagnostic accuracy can be performed. Researchers herein performed a nested case-control study including 9,157 patients with ED headache visits; 57 of these (0.6%; 95% CI:0.5-0.8) had a subsequent CVD hospitalization often at another medical center. Median time of 107 days was recorded from ED visit to hospitalization. Among patients with prior stroke or neurosurgical procedures, ED visits for headache complaints are suggested to be important opportunities for CVD prevention. Among cases, there were poorer documented neurological examinations, which may represent an opportunity for ED process improvement.
