Cerebrovascular complications and vasculopathy in patients with herpes simplex virus central nervous system infection
Journal of the Neurological Sciences Oct 27, 2020
Fan TH, Khoury J, Cho SM, et al. - Researchers analyzed patients with herpes simplex viruses (HSV) central nervous system (CNS) infections, to report the clinical as well as imaging characteristics of cerebrovascular complications in this patient group. This study involved 36 eligible patients, of whom, 6 patients (17%) suffered cerebrovascular complications. Cerebrovascular complications (1 ischemic stroke, 1 intraparenchymal hemorrhage) occurred in two patients with HSV-1 encephalitis. Four patients experiencing HSV-2 infection without encephalitis also encountered cerebrovascular complications (3 ischemic strokes, 1 cerebral vein thrombosis). Overall, it was evident that in patients with HSV CNS infections, cerebrovascular complications of the disease can occur with encephalitis or as isolated events with vasculitis.
