Cerebrospinal fluid leak at percutaneous exit of ventricular catheter as crucial risk factor for external ventricular drainage-related infection in adult neurosurgical patients
World Neurosurgery Oct 11, 2017
Park J, et al. - Ventricular catheter placement for temporary cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion seemed associated with a considerable risk of CSF infection. Authors here investigated the effect of a CSF leak on CSF-related infection and the predisposing factors for a CSF leak. They identified that a prolonged CSF leak for > 1 day at the percutaneous catheter exit site was a critical risk factor for external ventricular drainage (EVD)-related CSF infection and an intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) > 10 mL was a predisposing factor for a CSF leak.
