Cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers in patients with neurological symptoms but without neurological diseases
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica May 20, 2019
Constantinescu R, et al. - Researchers assessed if cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers played a part in managing patients admitted with neurological symptoms in whom neurological disorders could be excluded. They included 90 patients without a final neurological diagnosis, out of a cohort with 990 patients, after 900 with a neurological diagnosis were excluded. The CSF markers neurofilament light chain, total tau protein, and glial fibrillary acidic protein did not demonstrate indications of neuronal or astroglial cell harm near symptom onset. Also, in this group, raised levels of CSF-markers were not expected. If they are present, a suspicion of underlying neurological disorders should be raised. Further investigations are needed in these cases.
