Cerebral gray matter volume in patients with chronic migraine: Correlations with clinical features
The Journal of Headache and Pain Jan 18, 2018
Coppola G, et al. - The researchers performed this work with the aim to explore if there is a relationship between fluctuations in the gray matter (GM) volumes and clinical features of chronic migraine (CM). In patients with CM, no gross morphometric changes were observed when compared with HCs (Healthy controls). However, using more-liberal uncorrected statistical thresholds, several brain areas, known to be involved in nociception/antinociception, multisensory integration, and analgesic dependence, showed subtle GM volume changes in association with CM. At least in a subgroup of patients, these slight morphometric impairments could lead to the development and continuation of maladaptive acute medication usage.
