Cephalometric and functional mandibular reconstructive outcomes using a horizontal scapular tip free flap
Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jan 11, 2021
Sheehan CC, Haskins AD, Huang AT, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to illustrate the feasibility of using the scapula tip free flap (STFF) in a horizontal orientation to take advantage of the anatomy of the scapular tip bone to re-create a mandibular symphysis. Between October 2016 and June 2020, eight patients underwent oromandibular reconstruction with a horizontally oriented STFF. Primary outcomes, including flap survival, complications, and return to oral diet, have been collected. The cephalometric analysis showed similar measurements between preoperative and postoperative mandibles and reconstructed mandibles, respectively. To reconstruct large anterior mandibular defects with satisfactory results, STFFs can be oriented horizontally.
