Cephalic elevation device for second-stage cesarean delivery: A randomized controlled trial

Obstetrics and Gynecology Apr 02, 2020

Lassey SC, Little SE, Saadeh M, et al. - Researchers examined whether a cephalic elevation device decreases time to delivery following hysterotomy and lowers morbidity in cesarean deliveries during the second stage of labor. In this double-blind randomized controlled trial, they included nulliparous, term women aged 18–50 years with vertex singleton pregnancies if they were to undergo cesarean delivery in the second stage of labor. The delivering provider inserted the cephalic elevation device in all participating women; these women were allocated to inflation or noninflation of the device. Randomization of 60 women who underwent cesarean delivery in the second stage was performed from January 2018 through July 2019. Outcomes revealed a 23-second reduction time from hysterotomy to delivery in correlation with the use of the cephalic elevation device during second-stage cesarean delivery.
