Central vein sign for multiple sclerosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Clinical Radiology | Mar 11, 2020
Bhandari A, et al. - A systematic review and meta-analysis were designed to examine the diagnostic value of the central vein sign (CVS) in multiple sclerosis (MS) and to analyze the proportion of positive lesions for CVS needed to distinguish MS from non-MS mimics. Researchers carried out a literature review and a proportion meta-analysis to investigate the proportion of the CVS in MS lesions. They included studies reporting a threshold of the CVS containing lesions with 100% diagnostic accuracy. This was correlated to MS mimics in order to ascertain the discriminative value of the CVS. Additional work is required to integrate this into the existing diagnostic criteria, although the CVS is a clinically relevant and viable sign. As the manual measurement is a time-consuming process, the improvement of automated methods will be advantageous. The CVS will have an important role in the diagnosis and differentiation of MS with improvements in computational imaging techniques.
