Central sensitization inventory mediates the relationship between inflammatory bowel disease activity and worse musculoskeletal pain experiences

Pain Practice Aug 30, 2019

Falling CL, Stebbings S, Baxter DG, et al. - Researchers performed a cross-sectional online survey among 208 adults (18 to 88 years of age) with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to determine whether IBD activity influences musculoskeletal pain experiences (severity/interference) in these adults. Further, they sought for the mediating effects of the Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI) in these relationships. IBD activity indices, numeric rating scales, PROMIS Pain Interference, and the CSI were included in the survey questionnaires. The analysis revealed a positive association between active IBD and worse musculoskeletal pain experiences. They noted significant mediation of the CSI between active IBD and pain severity. Further, significant mediation of the CSI and pain severity was demonstrated between active IBD and pain interference. Findings thereby indicate a significant influence of symptoms of central sensitization on musculoskeletal pain experiences in IBD.
