Central retinal vein occlusion in young individuals: A comparison of risk factors and clinical outcomes
Retina Oct 04, 2019
Rothman A, et al. - Via a single-center retrospective study of individuals with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO; n = 26) presenting between January 2009 and July 2016, experts contrasted the presentation and outcomes of patients younger than 50 years vs patients aged 50 years and older with CRVO. At presentation, younger individuals had better visual acuity compared with the elderly and a lower incidence of cystoid macular edema. For CRVO, 21 of 36 younger individuals had at least one recognizable nontraditional risk factor. At final follow-up, younger patients vs older patients, received fewer total intravitreal injection with superior final acuity. In conclusion, superior baseline and final acuities was seen in younger patients, along with a lower incidence of cystoid macular edema at presentation, and they received fewer intravitreal injections in comparison with elderly. Moreover, in younger patients, workup for etiology of CRVO may exhibit nontraditional risk factors for CRVO.
