Central pathology review of salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma
Head & Neck Feb 05, 2020
Ueda K, Murase T, Nagao T, et al. - In total, 219 salivary tumor cases originally diagnosed as adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC), a slow-growing tumor, have been retrieved from 15 Japanese reference hospitals in order to evaluate the role of a central pathology review in the diagnosis of salivary gland AdCC. According to results, the AdCC diagnosis was revised in 21/219 cases after the review. After the central pathology review, a significant proportion of AdCC pathology reports have been revised. It should be stressed that the greatest attention should be paid to differentiate AdCC from cribriform variant basal cell adenoma/adenocarcinoma, which is very rare in tumors of the salivary glands.
