Central obesity and incident atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease events in hemodialysis patients
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Nov 23, 2019
Lin TY, et al. - In this prospective evaluation, researchers determined the link between central obesity ascertained by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in a cohort of 166 patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (60 ± 12 years of age). They detected significantly higher BMI, total fat mass, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and triglycerides but significantly lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in patients with central obesity vs patients without central obesity. An incident ASCVD event was reported in 40 patients during a median observation period of 4.3 years. Findings revealed less favorable plasma lipid profiles and higher levels of inflammation but not an increased risk of ASCVD in hemodialysis patients having central obesity, as determined by the A/G ratio (android to gynoid fat mass ratio).
