Central compartment atopic disease: Prevalence of allergy and asthma compared with other subtypes of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps
International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology Nov 08, 2019
Marcus S, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis at a tertiary care institution over the period from 2015 to 2019 to determine the prevalence of allergy and asthma in central compartment atopic disease (CCAD) and other chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyp (CRSwNP) subtypes. CRSwNP has been grouped into the following subtypes: allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS); aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD); CCAD; and CRSwNP not otherwise specified (CRSwNP NOS). Participants in the study were 356 patients. The authors discovered that CRSwNP NOS was the most common subtype, with CRSwNP/CC being the least common, with other CRS subtypes ranging from 11.5% to 24.2%. CCAD is a clinically distinct CRSwNP phenotype with a high allergen prevalence and low asthma prevalence. An allergy prevalence approaching that of CCAD and an asthma prevalence approaching CRSwNP NOS was found in patients with both CCAD and diffuse sinonasal polyps.
