Celiac disease prevalence in a large series of patients with Behçet's disease
International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases Jan 31, 2019
Koçak E, et al. - In order to determine the link between Behçet's disease (BD) and celiac disease (CD), researchers assessed the prevalence of CD among 210 BD patients. Further, they evaluated endoscopic findings in Turkish BD patients. Serological testing for anti-gliadin and tissue transglutaminase antibodies was performed on all patients. A full 190 patients who accepted upper gastrointestinal system endoscopy underwent endoscopic examinations. Positive anti-gliadin and tissue transglutaminase antibody immunoglobulin A (IgA) and IgG antibodies were detected in 4.2% of patients with BD. Among Turkish BD patients, the prevalence of biopsy-confirmed CD was 1.05%. The most common endoscopic findings included antral gastritis, duodenitis, and esophagitis. Findings revealed no possible association between BD and CD despite sharing many similar clinical manifestations.
