CD70 expression correlates with a worse prognosis in malignant pleural mesothelioma patients via immune evasion and enhanced invasiveness
Journal of Pathology Nov 08, 2019
Inaguma S, Lasota J, Czapiewski P, et al. - In this study, 172 well-characterized primary diffuse malignant mesothelioma of the pleura (MPM, a highly aggressive tumour that typically is related to short survival) tumors including epithelioid (n = 145), biphasic (n = 15), and sarcomatoid (n = 12) histotypes were assessed immunohistochemically for CD70, CD27, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD56, PDCD1 (PD-1) and FOXP3 expression in MPM cells and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and the relationships of these molecules with clinicopathological parameters and clinical outcome were investigated to evaluate the potential of these molecules for clinical purpose. From the findings, it was implied that in individuals with these neoplasms, CD70–CD27 pathway improves the malignant phenotypes of MPM and decreases antitumor immune response. Moreover, for prognostic assessments as well as targeted therapeutics, these markers could be beneficial in MPM.
