Causes of excess mortality in veterans treated for posttraumatic stress disorder
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Jun 27, 2019
Forehand JA, et al. - Causes of death among veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were delineated in order to inform preventive interventions for this treatment population. This retrospective cohort study included 491,040 veterans who initiated PTSD treatment. Veterans with PTSD showed significantly higher all-cause mortality compared with the general US population. Suicide, accidental injury, and viral hepatitis were the causes of significantly increased mortality among veterans with PTSD. Of those dying from accidental injury, death of more than half from poisoning was reported. Researchers recommended targeting these important causes of death in preventive interventions.
