Causes and rates of 30-day readmissions after percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage procedure
Radiology Jan 04, 2019
Sarwar A, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers examined rates and causes of 30-day readmission for patients who undergo percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) procedures. They reviewed PTBD procedures performed at a tertiary care institution (June 2008 to May 2013). There were 266 procedures in 266 patients and the cause of obstruction was malignant in 50.0% of patients. Medicaid insurance and bilateral PTBDs were correlated with 30-day readmission at multivariable analysis. They found that 30-day readmissions are common after primary biliary drainage and most unplanned readmissions are drain-related. Almost half of the unplanned interventional radiology-related readmissions can be avoided.
