Cause-specific mortality in gout: Novel findings of elevated risk of non-cardiovascular related deaths
Arthritis & Rheumatology Jun 13, 2019
Vargas-Santos AB, et al. - Patients with gout vs the general population were examined for cause-specific mortality beyond cardiovascular (CV) diseases. From 832,258 residents of Skåne (Sweden) aged 18+, they matched 19,497 with a new diagnosis of gout (32% women) to 194,947 comparators. Researchers noted a higher prevalence of chronic kidney disease, metabolic and CV comorbidities among persons with gout. In terms of cause-specific mortality, they noted the strongest associations for the relation of gout to the risk of death due to renal disease, diseases of digestive system, CV diseases, infections, dementia. This emphasizes the necessity for improved management of comorbidities.
