Cause-specific mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease and atrial fibrillation
American Journal of Nephrology Jul 30, 2018
Airy M, et al. - Researchers assessed the links between atrial fibrillation (AF) and cause-specific mortality in 62,459 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate 15–59 mL/min/1.73 m2 (6,639 patients with AF and 55,820 without AF) followed in a large health care system, using Cox regression models. Findings demonstrated an association between the presence of AF and higher all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in a non-dialysis-dependent CKD population. Since high cardiovascular risk was observed in patients with both CKD and AF, clinicians are recommended to aim at reducing the overall excess cardiovascular mortality, and not only stroke, in these patients.
