Causality between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes: A meta-analysis with bias analysis
Liver International Mar 21, 2019
Morrison AE, et al. - Because it has not been proven that there is a causal link between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM), researchers measured the probability of causality by looking at the sensitivity of observational links to possible confounding. For this investigation, studies were searched on June 5, 2018 to find those assessing NAFLD longitudinal associations with CVD or T2DM. The study findings strongly suggest a causal relationship between NAFLD and T2DM; there was less robust evidence of a causal link between NAFLD and CVD. The risk of developing T2DM can likely be reduced by targeting NAFLD therapeutically.
