Catch-up growth, rapid weight growth, and continuous growth from birth to 6 years of age in very-preterm-born children
Neonatology Jul 19, 2018
Toftlund LH, et al. - This was a 6-year follow-up study of 281 very-preterm-born infants (VPI) examining how different types of post-discharge nutrition affect growth until 6 years of age in children born VPI. Two hundred thirty-nine children took an interest in the follow-up. Regardless of the feeding group, catch-up growth occurred mainly before discharge. Researchers found that unfortified human milk (UHM)-feeding compared to both preterm formula (PF)- and fortified human milk (FHM)-feeding resulted in a slower but continuous catch-up growth until 6 years of age. It was observed that rapid weight growth was most pronounced shortly after discharge and particularly if PF-fed.
