Carpal tunnel syndrome in advanced age: A sonographic and electrodiagnostic study
Muscle & Nerve May 02, 2019
Mulroy E, et al. - In this investigation, researchers systematically reviewed ultrasound, electrodiagnostic and clinical data obtained over a twelve month period in patients from two age groups: 80-95 years and 40-65 years old after noting inconsistent sonographic median nerve cross-sectional area (CSA) enlargement at the wrist in very elderly patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). In very elderly patients, nerve ultrasound was less sensitive than in the younger group, despite a higher prevalence of severe CTS, and was not associated with clinical or electrodiagnostic severity. In very elderly populations, median nerve ultrasound CSA at the wrist is not a sensitive CTS marker.
