Carotid ultrasound findings in rheumatoid arthritis and control subjects: A case-control study
International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases Feb 01, 2019
Wah-Suarez MI, et al. - In this prospective cross-sectional, observational study, researchers compared rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-patients and controls in a Mexican-mestizo population to assess the carotid ultrasound (US) components, like carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and carotid plaque (CP). In 103 patients with RA and 106 controls, they noticed bilateral CP was more than twice as common in RA vs controls (15.5% vs 6.6%). The prevalence of increased cIMT was higher in RA-patients either in both sides were statistically significant. They found that RA-cases with subclinical atherosclerotic disease had more heterogeneous plaques characteristics.
