Carotid stenosis: The impact of frailty syndrome on patient outcomes
Journal of Vascular Surgery Aug 25, 2018
Lee A, et al. - Researchers assessed the impact of frailty on outcomes after carotid inventions, including both carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS), via performing an 8-year (2005-2012) retrospective analysis of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program including patients who underwent CEA or CAS for carotid artery stenosis. Outcomes suggest that frail status independently predicts complications, mortality, failure to rescue, and 30-day readmissions among patients undergoing surgical intervention for carotid stenosis. They identified no correlation of frailty with adverse outcomes in patients undergoing CAS. Hence, the outcome of patients could be enhanced via incorporating frailty status in the treatment algorithm (CEA vs CAS).
