Carotid intima-media thickness in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and survival: A multicenter prospective study
The Clinical Respiratory Journal Apr 13, 2019
Gulbas G, et al. - Researchers examined association and survival between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). For this purpose, they performed Doppler ultrasound (USG) in 668 stable COPD patients at 24 centers in order to measure CIMT. Follow-up of two years was performed. Two groups were defined: group 1, including 200 patients CIMT with<0.78 mm, and group 2 comprising 410 with CIMT≥0.78 mm. In Group B, Group C, and Group D, the observed risk of CIMT increase was 2.2 folds, 9.7 folds, and 4.4 folds, as compared with Group A, as per logistic regression model. There was a link between risk of CIMT increase and cholesterol level. This work represents the first ever inquiry regarding CIMT with combined GOLD assessment groups. In COPD patients, the increase in atherosclerosis risk was supported in this study. Doppler USG of the carotid artery was recommended in COPD patients at severe stages.
