Cardiovascular system changes in rheumatoid arthritis patients with continued low disease activity
Rheumatology International Jun 21, 2018
Biskup M, et al. - Researchers evaluated certain cardiovascular (CV) parameters in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who have continuous low disease activity. A total of 70 RA patients without known CVD and 33 healthy controls of comparable age were included in the study group. Researchers looked at blood pressure, serum amino-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, carotid intima media thickness, electrocardiography, ejection fraction, and diastolic dysfunction in echocardiography in these patients. Findings suggested an association between RA with continued low disease activity and atherosclerosis and heart dysfunction. CV parameters and patients’ age and disease duration were related strongly. Authors noted a correlation of deterioration of CV parameters with higher DAS28, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, rheumatoid factor concentration, and bone erosions.
