Cardiovascular risk in 159,934 frequent blood donors while addressing the healthy donor effect
Heart Apr 12, 2019
Peffer K, et al. - Researchers assessed cardiovascular risk in relation to regular blood donation among 159,934 Dutch whole-blood donors with an active donation career of ≥ 10 years. Based on the number of donations during the 10-year qualification period, these subjects were classified into sex-specific donation tertiles. Cardiovascular endpoints were based on hospital discharge diagnoses and death certificates from Dutch Hospital Data and Statistics Netherlands and occurring following the 10-year qualification period. The age-adjusted and starting year-adjusted hazard rate ratios (HRR) were determined via Cox regression. According to findings, long-term, high-frequency blood donation offered some protection against cardiovascular disease. However, this impact was only evident in women.
