Cardiovascular risk factors and disease after male germ cell cancer
Journal of Clinical Oncology Dec 18, 2019
Lauritsen J, Hansen MK, Bandak M, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) after the treatment of male germ cell cancer. Using the Danish Testicular Cancer database, clinical data of 5,185 was assessed and then 10 men were matched for each patient with respect to date of birth from the Danish normal population by risk-set sampling; 51,850 men comprised the participants from the normal population. The analysis revealed an association of treatment with bleomycin-etoposide-cisplatin with highly increased risks of CVD < 1 year after treatment start and mildly increased risks after 10 years of follow-up. The risk of diabetes but not incident CVD increases in correlation to radiotherapy receipt. Patients followed in a surveillance program had a comparable risk of CVD to that of the normal population.
