Cardiovascular risk factors and COVID-19 outcomes in hospitalised patients: A prospective cohort study
BMJ Open Feb 25, 2021
Collard D, Nurmohamed NS, Kaiser Y, et al. - By analyzing data from the prospective Dutch CovidPredict cohort, researchers assessed the time-to-event association between hypertension, dyslipidaemia, diabetes and COVID-19 outcomes. Participants included admitted, adult patients with a positive COVID-19 PCR or high suspicion depending on CT-imaging of the thorax. Mortality during the first 21 days post-admission was assessed as the primary outcome. Following observation of 21 days, death or discharge for palliative care occurred in 19.2% of the patients. Findings revealed a stepwise elevated risk for short-term mortality in relation to accumulation of hypertension, dyslipidaemia and diabetes, independent of age and gender, in hospitalised COVID-19 patients.
