Cardiovascular risk and risk factor management in type 2 diabetes mellitus: A population-based cohort study assessing sex disparities
Circulation Jun 16, 2019
Wright AK, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers focused on gender disparities in cardiovascular risk and risk factor management among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Participants were 79,985 patients with incident T2DM matched to 386,547 patients without diabetes mellitus. The likelihood of being obese, hypertensive, and have hypercholesterolemia was more in women with T2DM vs men with T2DM, whereas, the chances of being prescribed lipid-lowering medication and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors were less in women with T2DM, particularly if they had cardiovascular disease, in comparison to men with T2DM. Overall, no significantly higher relative increase in cardiovascular risk was found in women with T2DM vs men developing T2DM.
