Cardiovascular risk and risk factor management in type 2 diabetes: A population-based cohort study assessing sex disparities

Circulation Apr 19, 2019

Wright AK, et al. - Among 79,985 participants with incident T2DM matched to 386,547 individuals without diabetes, researchers assessed differences in biological sex with respect to cardiovascular risk and risk factor management in this retrospective cohort study. They used the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, which was linked to hospital and death records for people in England, to identify eligible study participants. Cardiovascular risk was evaluated using sex-stratified Cox models. A significantly higher relative increase in cardiovascular risk was not observed among women vs men with T2DM. However, the chances of having obesity, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia were more in women vs men with T2DM. Lipid-lowering medication and ACE inhibitors were less likely to be prescribed among women vs men with T2DM, especially if they had CVD.
