Cardiovascular mortality and morbidity following radical radiotherapy for lung cancer: Is cardiovascular death under-reported?
Lung Cancer Jul 22, 2020
Sun F, Franks K, Murray L, et al. - This retrospective observational cohort study was performed to determine the burden of cardiac events after radiotherapy as well as to examine the accuracy of death certification in patients who were manged with radical radiotherapy for lung cancer. This study involved 1,224 patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who received radical radiotherapy; 378 (30.9%) patients had cardiovascular disease at baseline. Per findings, in patients receiving radiotherapy for NSCLC, baseline cardiovascular disease was highly prevalent and there were significant rates of post-radiotherapy cardiovascular hospitalisation. Still, cardiovascular disease caused only a small share of deaths. With the large amount of sudden deaths reported, this collectively shows a large amount of under-reporting of cardiovascular death in official statistics.
