Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in adult patients with repaired aortic coarctation
Journal of the American Heart Association Nov 16, 2021
Meijs TA, Minderhoud SCS, Muller SA, et al. - Using data from the Dutch Congenital Corvitia (CONCOR) registry, researchers investigated the incidence of and risk factors for cardiovascular events (coronary artery disease, stroke/transient ischemic attack, aortic complications, arrhythmias, heart failure hospitalizations, endocarditis, and cardiovascular death) in adult patients with repaired coarctation of the aorta (CoA) and compared the mortality rates between these adults and the general population.
Among a total of 920 included patients, 191 patients (21%) experienced at least 1 cardiovascular event after a mean follow‐up of 9.3±5.1 years.
Aortic complications and arrhythmias were the most frequent among the 270 recorded cardiovascular events.
The risk of cardiovascular events appeared higher in significant correlation with older age at initial CoA repair and elevated left ventricular mass index.
They recorded 3.3 times higher mortality rate than the expected based on an age‐ and gender‐matched cohort from the Dutch general population.
