Cardiovascular health and dementia incidence among older adults in Latin America: Results from the 10/66 Study
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Mar 30, 2019
Perales-Puchalt J, et al. - Considering the mounting evidence indicating that cardiovascular health (CVH) and brain health are connected, researchers investigated whether cardiovascular health is longitudinally associated with dementia in six Latin American countries. Using data from the 10/66 study, which incorporated non-demented people at baseline aged 65+ in six Latin American countries (n=6,447) who were followed up for three years, they performed a longitudinal analysis. CVH was poor in 6.2% of participants, moderate in 81.0% and ideal in 12.8%. Observations suggested the protective influence of moderate and ideal levels of CVH in old age against dementia incidence, since these participants had a significantly lower risk of dementia vs those with poor CVH.
