Cardiovascular health among non-Hispanic Asian Americans: NHANES, 2011–2016
Journal of the American Heart Association Jul 03, 2019
Fang J, et al. - Using data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-2016), researchers focused on cardiovascular health (CVH) among non-Hispanic Asian Americans (NHAAs), relative to non-Hispanic white (NHW) participants. They analyzed 5278 NHW and 1486 NHAA participants aged ≥20 years, focusing on 7 metrics (smoking, weight, physical activity, diet, blood cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure). They evaluated ideal CVH (the percentage meeting 6 to 7 metrics), poor CVH (the percentage meeting only 0 to 2 metrics), and the overall mean CVH score. Among NHAAs and among NHWs, 8.7% and 5.9% were the respective adjusted prevalence of ideal CVH. The prevalence of overall ideal CVH was higher among NHAAs vs NHWs. However, the groups did not differ with respect to ideal CVH when a lower body mass index threshold was used for NHAAs.
