Cardiovascular diseases may play a negative role in the prognosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
European Journal of Neurology Jun 11, 2018
Mandrioli J, et al. - In this multicenter, retrospective study, the researchers investigated the role of comorbidities in the prognosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). They enrolled patients diagnosed with ALS from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2013 in 13 referral centers located in 10 Italian areas. Findings revealed that hypertension and heart diseases, and hematological diseases were independently correlated with shorter survival, along with the other clinical factors known to be prognostic for ALS survival. They suggested some mechanisms that were possibly involved in disease progression, giving new interesting clues that could be of value for clinical practice and ALS comorbidity management.
