Cardiovascular disease-related chronic conditions among Veterans Affairs nonmetastatic colorectal cancer survivors: A matched case–control analysis
Cancer Management and Research Jul 28, 2019
Zullig LL, et al. - Using logistic regression, researchers compared nonmetastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors vs matched noncancer controls to assess how these two groups differ in terms of the likelihood of being diagnosed with cardiovascular disease-related chronic conditions and the chances of achieving control of them over the year post-CRC diagnosis. There were 9,758 nonmetastatic CRC patients selected from the Veterans Affairs health care system from fiscal years 2009 to 2012 who were matched to 29,066 noncancer controls. They found that nonmetastatic CRC survivors vs noncancer controls had a 57% higher chance of being diagnosed with hypertension and had worse blood pressure control in the year post-diagnosis. They also observed a lower probability of being diagnosed with hyperlipidemia or low-density lipoprotein control in CRC survivors. Furthermore, comparable diabetes diagnoses and control were seen in nonmetastatic CRC survivors vs noncancer controls.
