Cardiovascular and other competing causes of death among patients with cancer from 2006 to 2015: An Australian population-based study
Cancer Jan 25, 2019
Ye Y, et al. – In this study, researchers evaluated 21,637 patients who had a first cancer registered between 2006 and 2013, with a follow-up to 2015, in order to estimate the incidence of mortality due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and other competing causes. They observed significantly varied standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) and absolute excess risks for CVD deaths by first cancer site. Findings also revealed elevated risks after first diagnosis of lung cancer, hematologic malignancy, and urinary tract cancer. They noted a significant increase in the SMRs for deaths from infectious disease and respiratory disease, which were highest in the first year of follow-up for other noncancer events.
